Opened in 1983 and designed by George Adams, Architect, Holy Spirit Church is an attempt to design an Australian Catholic church in harmony with the beauty of the Australian natural environment. The building was sited to protect areas of natural bushland and the entrance to the church is through natural surroundings, embracing creation.
Built in an area of large tourist influx at certain times of the year, the building was designed to allow for a large undercover overflow by using offset walls that protect the building from western sun penetration, and allow direct sight lines to the altar from the overflow areas. The materials were selected to blend with the bushland environment. Supplementry planting of native plants was carried out to attract birds to the “creation” garden surrounding the church.
The church is designed as a church/hall with the sanctuary screened off as required. Leadlight windows enrich the interior.
